Massive thank you to my friend and mentor, Larry Rice, and his lovely wife Joy Rice, for welcoming me into their beautiful home and for their incredible endorsement. Over the years, I’ve learned a lot from Larry. I want to share three lessons he taught me that completely shaped the lawyer—and the person—I am today.
Number One: I actually read his book. Most people think it’s just a book of legal forms, but if you actually read it, it is a masterclass in creating systems so you’re working smarter, not harder. It taught me how to actually run a law practice.
Number Two: You are never going to finish working, so take that lunch break. We fool ourselves when we say, ‘I’ll take a break when I’m done working,’ because in this profession, that time will never come. Life is for living today. Not someday.
And Number Three: When you walk into a room and have to choose between sitting next to an old judge or a young attorney—have the conversation with the young attorney! Young attorneys are the future of this profession, and they need mentorship to succeed. Almost 20 years ago, Larry sat down next to me at Neely’s BBQ… and because of that choice, I am standing before you today as a candidate.
